No, not the current activity that many people on the Millmead Estate are doing. It’s a new film being shown on Channel Four tonight. I come from around there so I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle this in Margate:
“Pharaoh has found the perfect solution for the Promised Land. All the unwanted elements of society – asylum seekers and economic refugees, the long term unemployed, sexual deviants, substance abusers, petty criminals and ethnic minorities – are forced to live in Dreamland, a shanty town built on the site of a disused funfair.”
Not a work of fiction then.
I tried to get a job at Dreamland when I was 15 but had no luck, they weren’t that desperate. Luckily the Palace Pier had me when I came to Brighton so I could finally realise my ambition of being a true-to-life Carnie.

Been a real busy month at King Mansions with some great web projects coming out the door this week.
Here are a few of the things I have been reading and looking at during the month of August.
Easy to follow recipe for Bhindi Gosht. Great Pakistani Okra & Lamb Curry from scratch. You can get half of those ingredients in a packet of Karahi Gosht Masala spice blend available from your local world food outlet.
Short Movie (10 mins) called Flesh which juxtaposes a vision of a pornographic American society with the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. This is NSFW.
“Over the past several months The Nation has interviewed fifty combat veterans of the Iraq War from around the United States in an effort to investigate the effects of the four-year-old occupation on average Iraqi civilians. These combat veterans, some of whom bear deep emotional and physical scars, and many of whom have come to oppose the occupation, gave vivid, on-the-record accounts. They described a brutal side of the war rarely seen on television screens or chronicled in newspaper accounts.” Superb article in The Nation.
Motorcycle News magazine need to check which ads go with which stories, as can be seen here.
How many times can Superman give his secret identity away without anybody remembering? Lots.
Ooh! Another new episode of Tribe tonight. Read interviews with the presenter Bruce Parry and some of his crew.

Here’s all the online crap I’ve found interesting in July:
The Story of My Sands - A look at the codewords used over tannoy systems. I well remember a Mr Sands on Brighton Pier and Somerfield.
Heavens Above. Calculates where satellites and the ISS will appear in the sky. Apparently you can see Iridium Flares in daylight too if you know exactly where to look.
What The World Eats. Time Magazine photo study of the food consumed by different cultures around the world.
Charlotte Gainsbourg - The Songs That We sing - (listen by choosing ‘5:55 The Album’)
The 12 Master Formats of Advertism. Nice video explaining the 12 main advertising tropes.
Mike Read is backing Boris Johnson. Not the dead cockney one but the dire radio DJ. Not only is his article pure reactionist gold but the comments are hilarious too. I say Mike Read for Mayor!
Trailer for a crazy South Korean movie about dragons with rocket launchers, called D-War.
The iPhone v the Nokia E70. An interesting article (contains comedy and swearing).

Two movies that I’m really looking forward to seeing.
First up is the temporary titled 1-18-08. You can see the trailer here. Created by J.J Abrams, the person behind Lost, this movies seems to have a sufficient amount of explosions to keep anybody happy.
Next we have Black Sheep which is a Kiwi movie with effects from the Weta workshop. And what looks like a little bit of Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste thrown in for good measure. Love the final sequence in the trailer.

No, this isn’t a post about Allo Allo, just a collection of some rants I’ve seen on the net recently. We all love a good moan and here are some of the latest.
Warren Ellis took a well deserved shot at the inane celebrations of St Patrick’s Day by people who are not Irish. His Annual St Patrick’s Day Message is well worth a read.
Charlie Brooker loves a good moan too but in this article he stops for a moment just to watch the wonderful The Trap documentary by Adam Curtis. I’ve enjoyed the last two episodes and I hope he can knit it all together for Sunday’s final one.
I saw Casino Royale this week and though that Daniel Craig was a superb choice for James Bond. There are some people that disagree … a year before they saw the film. Their site is the imaginatively titled www.danielcraigisnotbond.com.
Julie Burchill has a good rant about my local council in Brighton & Hove. “Brighton Women’s Centre was shocked to find its modest annual funding had been slashed from £6,000 to a big fat zero. This at a time when the council could pocket £2m in parking fines in a six-month period without breaking sweat.” All this from her new book, Made In Brighton, coming soon.
What would make me moan? Possibly seeing this as I opened my door in the morning.

Lets all hope that West Ham manage to secure Matthew Upson from Birmingham by the end of the day. We need him. Oh, and Shawn Wright Phillips from Chelsea would be nice!
Thank you to Shilpa Shetty for galvanising the nation in its fight against bitchy z-list celebrities. And for the £30 I won from placing a small bet on you.
Down The Line - New BBC Radio 4 comedy from Paul Whitehouse, Charlie Higson and Simon Day.
The Kanardo Blog - An amazing collection of design, both web and print, from around the world. You can also check out Infosthetics which has a similar collection.
Smashing Telly - Want a new documentary TV channel? Check out Smashing Telly. This brings you all the best documentaries, films and shows that are available on the Internet.
Brilliant video of the Indo-Dutch rock and roll band The Tielman Brothers on Dutch TV from 1960.
Supermarket Monopoly. Board game with a difference.
The Bumper B3ta Book of Sick Jokes is now downloadable as a PDF. Warning! This contains some very sick humour and you could easily be sacked for looking at this. If you find offensive at anything then I wouldn’t take a look at this at all.
LA Muse - A new ongoinging online graphic novel by Adi Tantimedh and Hugu Petrus.
Running from Camera - Strange collection of photos featuring a man running from his camera.

Not much this week. Here’s some interesting sites:
videojug.com - Life Explained. On Film. Brilliant YouTube inspired site with videos showing you how to dop almost anything.
UK HDTV Buyers Guide - Which kind of recommends not bothering to buy one for a couple of years.
The Wilhelm Scream - Funny video showing the same scream sample being used on hundreds of films.
Transformers Movie Trailer - This doesn’t look too bad actually.

I’ve been so busy since my last post working on a couple of amazing looking websites so here’s a week’s worth of posts in one big go.
The new Die Hard 4 teaser trailer:
The new man at Upton Park, Alan Curbishley. I think we’ll put 3 past Man Utd on Sunday.

He-Man sings 4 Non Blondes. A very messed up YouTube video featuring a camp He-Man singing a dance version of What’s Going On. I can’t get this out of my head now.
30 Essential Pieces Of Free Software for Windows. Superb collection of links to applications that will enhance your PC experience.
Boycott Christmas. Cartoons from the Christmas Resistance Movement.
The international contest of logos, trademarks and corporate identity Identity: Best of The Best 2006. Superb graphic design.
Look around Paisley Park. Take a 360 degree look around Prince’s home.
The Surrey Comet. Nothing special about this article entitled “Marksman called in to kill Kingston’s pigeons” but check out the comments below. Funniest thing I’ve seen this week.
Hot UK Deals. Amazing list of the latest cheap and free things to get online.

Hiding away on BBC4 earlier this year was one of the funniest programmes about television ever made, Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe. His caustic and sarcastic look at modern television and it’s audience is a breath of fresh against the season-long X-Factor/Strictly Come Dancing/Big Brother monstrosities we have on our screens.
Here he is in action highlighting some idiots desperate for fame (warning, contains swearing):
And if you’re in the mood for some online television here’s are some alternative YouTube videos I recommend:
Battle of the Album Covers (3 mins) - Famous album covers come alive and fight each other.
Charlie Brooker’s look at R Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet (2 mins) - This has to be seen to be believed. The world’s first hip-hopera.
Richard Dawkins lecture at an American college (37 mins) - Brilliant reading of some of Dawkin’s God Delusion book.
Japanese footage of today’s release of the Nintendo Wii (5 mins) - I should be getting mine at midnight on Thursday!
