Up to my eyeballs

God, so much work and other stuff going on in my life. Here’s a round of some bits and peices.

The ecommerce project I have been working on all summer has finally launched. Baby Star are a New Zealand company that have two shops selling baby clothing and accessories. My partner on this project, designer James Morse, and me have been turning the ugly OSCommerce product into something that’s actually quite lovely. And we’ve stripped out the tables and made it all with CSS positioning. No mean feat when it’s your first experience with ecommerce.

I’ve also been working on a much smaller website for Waters Hair Stylists in Brighton, a local hair salon. I created a simple, clean design, creating a professional and relaxing feel. Also we have plans to add many more pages, such as products and tanning solutions, so I have built this flexibility into the site. Using CSS for all styles and positioning speeds up any future site development.

Nintendo Crazy

Well my PS2 was traded last week and this week I took my old SNES in to get credit for the upcoming Nintendo Wii. Only £80 to go now on my Wii-fund. I was tempted to get the new Nintendo DS Browser today. Its a cartridge that allows you to use your handheld Nintendo DS to surf the web using the Opera web browser, more details here. Unfortunately I can’t find any detailed reviews of it online so I’m going to hold back from purchasing it for the time being.

If it has tabbed browsing so that I could have both Hotmail and Gmail running all the time and the ability to move from the pub’s wifi to my home one without reloading I’ll get myself a copy. It doesn’t play any Flash applications though so I think that rules out looking at video on YouTube. It’s only £25 at Amazon so it wouldn’t take that many good reviews for me to buy it.

Instead I have 42 All-Time Classics to keep me occupied when I’m on the move. The highlights on this Ninendo DS game are Backgammon, Chess, Bridge and a card game called President which you can with people online too. There’s even an option for worldwide Ludo, although I can’t see the day I’m sitting in the pub playing Ludo with some kid in Japan. Overall it’s well worth the £20 asking price.

If you get either of these cartridges and you want to play online using your Orange Livebox then check out my step-by-step instructions on how to configure your Nintendo DS.

And finally, check out my friend Seng starring in the music video to Jackie Wilson’s Higher & Higher back in the late eighties. Remember claymation? That’s some afro!

Calling all Brighton Singles!

This Thursday at The Koba (on Western Road) sees the latest event put on by Plenty More Fish In The Sea. Not quite speed dating and not as tacky as a singles night this is more like a club night for non-couples.

If you want to get your Bank Holiday weekend off to a good start then come on down. There’s DJ Agent T on the decks and it’ll be a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Tickets are £7 from plentymorefishinthesea@fsmail.net or a tenner on the door. Last time the place was rocking and everyone had a great time. See you there!

The truth behind Mr Goma.

I was sure I’ve seen that cabbies face before and I’m right. He was an old boyfriend of Lori’s.

Lori Green and Mr Goma

And its pretty obvious to me why he’s pulling that face.

Oh, and breaking news: Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are to divorce. She probably didn’t like the last plane he bought her.

The old ones are the old ones as they say.

But this is a bit weird, from the BBC website it says: “Mills formed the Heather Mills Health Trust, recycling prosthetic limbs and campaigning against landmines, after being hit by a police motorcycle as she crossed a road in 1993.” I’m sure if I got run over by a motorbike I’d start campaigning against landmines too!

West Ham Defeated

Well I’m gutted but the I’m so proud of the way we played. I hope the West Ham boys are all proud of their efforts as they gave us the most entertaining FA Cup final I’ve ever seen. Well done Liverpool.

As Hanson says, “This was one of the classic Cup finals and it is desperately unfortunate that they should lose on penalties. West Ham were the better side and should have won, but Liverpool had Steven Gerrard.”

And…

My friend Tony Pitt side-projects just get weirder and weirder. Check out his giant Munchie at Pimp My Snack.

And I presume EVERYBODY has seen this already but if you haven’t here’s the Cabbie who ended up talking about Apple on BBC News 24. Ha, still makes me laugh.

This is for the typonerds out there. Notice how the clock on 24 changes ever so slightly? Well obviously not as we have better things to do.

Round-up

Great weekend for football. West Ham had an impressive win over the green-faced Spurs and Henry consolidated my top spot of the Fantasy League I do. Looking forward to the FA Cup next weekend where hopefully West Ham will score a goal and Liverpool wont score any.

I see that Tom Cruise has been publicly mocked by internet bloggers. Well I think I’m the only person who actually rates the guy. Sod his strange religious convictions, I think he’s a good actor. But I know I’m in the minority.

Tonight on Channel 4 (23:05). Jon Snow reports about Iraq: The Hidden Story. he’ll compare TV footage with actual footage to see what kind of message the media is sending.

I’ve been busy tracing my family history using Ancestry.co.uk. Seems that my line goes right back to West Ham, Stepney and Tower Hamlets since 1861, where I traced my earliest ancestor. Her name was Eliza and she was born in Poplar (then Middlesex, now Newham or Tower Hamlets in London) in 1823. She lived with her son, two nieces, her sister and a male servant. I haven’t traced the husband so he was either dead or working overseas at that time. But servants, eh? I’ll have to look into this further.

My great great grandmother, Harriet, ran an oil and colorman shop in West Ham during 1881. An oil & colorman shop is a paint and hardware shop. Her husband William was a gas fitter and they had 5 kids. Try checking your own family tree out.

Really enjoyed last night’s double edition of the season two opener of Lost. It seems like they’ve taken onboard all the comments about ‘nothing actually ever happening’ and fit more into those two episodes than half of last season. It helped that they concentrated on only a few of the characters rather than the whole posse. The first two minutes were especially great, with the Scottish Jesus guy in his perfect home. Looks like I’ll be watching the rest of this series as well.

Bored? Then watch the Pilot Episode of The Mysterious Cities of Gold. YouTube looks like it has all the other episodes on there too! And C is For Cookie is on YouTube too, where Sesame Street meets V for Vendetta.

Oh, and my friend Tony is raising money for the BHF during the London to Brighton bike ride. You can sponsor him here if you wish. If he raises enough money he will go as his alter ego Flash Rock!
