Busy with websites

Posted on October 2nd, 2006 at 4:10 pm

I’ve just finished a site for my latest client, Poised To Move. It’s a home staging company or, to put it another way, they redecorate your flat before you sell it so that you can ask for more money.

Poised To Move Home Staging

I gave it a lot of white space to mirror the decluttering service of the company. The previous website was way too busy. Anyway, I hope you think it looks good.

I’m also currently working on a little side project I’ve created which I’m hoping will win the Brighton & Hove Web Awards for Best Community Site next year. I can’t reveal anything yet but I’ve written all the PHP code, all I need now is to start adding content.

If you read this site often you could always nominate me for this year’s award for Best Personal Site and Blogs. I didn’t get shortlisted last year and I doubt they’ll do it this year neither but you never know.

Brighton Tornado Attack

Posted on October 1st, 2006 at 11:14 am

The seafront was quite blowy this morning but not as windy as it was earlier on this morning as can be seen here:

From the BBC: Coastguards put out a warning to shipping after a tornado was seen sweeping along the South Coast just after dawn on Sunday.

They got the caption wrong as it’s actually Brighton Pier.

The tornado was probably nature’s response to this biblical happening in Margate, called Exodus, yesterday:

Kimberly-Clark Redundancies

Posted on September 21st, 2006 at 8:58 am

Well Kimberly-Clark, the makers of Andrex, have decided to shed a third (135) of it’s Brighton workforce. This isn’t great news of course and makes me wonder why this seems to happen to every company based at Trafalgar Place. It has a prison-like quality with those huge gates, maybe they think that some employers will strike back one day.

All the staff wear devices that you use to open doors but maybe they track movement too. And what are those strange plastic things in the ceiling? Yes, it the Big Brother house! It’s much easier to outsource the work after comprehensive ‘time and motion’ surveys. Err, allegedly.

Anyway, don’y buy Andrex, Charmin’s much better, and good luck to all the staff at Kimberly-Clark!

Oh, and here’s the trailer for the new 300 film by Frank Miller. Looks good.

And for a laugh. Here’s a Carry On Camping sketch from Shooting Stars:

I’ve no idea how they used this. Anybody have a ride or a meditation on it?

The Hummingbird Hawk-Moth

Brighton has a new visitor this summer. Introducing the Hummingbird Hawk-Moth:

This creature is normally found south of the Alps but for some reason this year they have been seen as far north as Finland.

The New Argus Website

Posted on September 2nd, 2006 at 2:12 pm

It’s good to see that The Argus has changed it’s website for the better. It now has a searchable news items, an RSS feed and permalinks. I might actually start reading it now.

Today’s news has a story on the artist Banksy who carried out some art attacks on Brighton music stores this week. “He took 500 copies of Paris Hilton’s debut album, Paris, and given them his own unique makeover…. On the front there is a sticker which claims her latest singles include “Why Am I Famous?”, “What Have I Done?” and “What Am I For?”… A picture of Paris behind the CD has replaced her head with that of her pet dog and the inlay card which features lyrics to her songs has slogans such as “Every CD you buy puts me even further out of your league” emblazoned across it. One picture has been replaced to show Paris getting out of a car next to a number of homeless people with the slogan “90per cent of success is just showing up.” - Read the whole story here.

It’s also good to see West Ham united on the back and front pages of many newspapers this morning due to the rumours of a Russian buy-out. The Sun lead with “I’m forever blowing Roubles” and had Tony Gale describing the new players as “the two biggest bombshells to hit the East End since the Luftwaffe.“. There a good article in the Independent too. Personally I think West Ham is undervalued at the moment and when the regeneration hits Newham in time for the 2012 Olympics the club could be worth a few more quid. Good business.

Hot hot hot!!!

It was pretty hot outside today and pretty hot indoors too.

Hot Clock

Notice the 29C at the bottom. And when I’m in bed tonight I doubt whether it will drop below 28C. I wonder what it’s like in London? Feel free to post your office and home temperatures in the comments below.

But if you do have some free time during the day then perhaps you should go along to the Scented Gardens at St Anne’s Well Park and check out the rehearsals for this year’s play in the park. No idea what play it was but I managed to catch five minutes before the heat got too much. This was around 11:00AM.

CPU overheating solution

Posted on July 4th, 2006 at 3:32 pm

It’s been 28.5C in my flat for the last two days (and nights) and my poor PC just couldn’t take the strain. First in started turning itself off while I was using intense applications such as Photoshop and then it was happening every five minutes. The problem was overheating.

Running some tests I worked out that the CPU temperature was 64C everytime it shutdown. It must have been triggering the PC’s safety mechanism. What I really need is a better CPU heatsink and fan. My one just isn’t powerful enough. But I have temporarily solved the problem as you can see.

Quick Fix

I’m now running at 49C - and my room feels much cooler.

Brighton Seafront Last Night + ISS

Posted on June 18th, 2006 at 11:32 am

Well summer looked like it had really started down the seafront last night. The area from the West Pier through to Hove Lawns was packed with around 3,000 under 18’s getting hammered on booze. It was lively but not rowdy and reminded me of my old Margate beach party days. There must have been quite a few casualties that night. By 10 there were a few passed out people and staggerers around but every one seemed to be having a laugh. I bet the Fortune of War was packed.

We did see the International Space Station though. I pointed out a bright moving light in the sky and after a bit of debate about it possibly being a plane I did get everyone to agree that it was a satalite. This morning I did some online research and discovered it was the ISS as it was travelling over the UK at exactly that time. There’s a good article about it at The Register and you can check the times you’ll see the ISS from Brighton Beach from NASA. We got six minutes of it last night which is much better than the 2 minutes you get at other times of the year.
