Fun and Games

Here’s a couple of games I’ve been playing this week:

First we have Line Rider. Just draw a simple line on the screen, press play and watch a man toboggan down the slope. You can redraw the line in more complicated waves as seen on YouTube.

Secondly we have Picto. This is a memory game where a new icon is added to the screen after every round. You just have to click the new one and ignore the others. It starts off easy but soon gets incredibly hard. I managed a score of 23 before my brain started to hurt.

It’s good to see the editting at The Argus is up to its usual fine standard, as can be seen with this article about durg-related crime.

And for some politics just check out Dan Olbermann’s special commentary on the Clinton vs Fox debacle. We always think of the US press as too government friendly but this goes to show that some networks aren’t scared to say what they think. The Guardian has also published Terry Jones’ latest letter to George Bush which is well worth a read.

And finally, from YouTube (again) comes this Simpsons classic, Dr Zaius.

Nintendo Crazy

Posted on October 7th, 2006 at 5:39 pm

Well my PS2 was traded last week and this week I took my old SNES in to get credit for the upcoming Nintendo Wii. Only £80 to go now on my Wii-fund. I was tempted to get the new Nintendo DS Browser today. Its a cartridge that allows you to use your handheld Nintendo DS to surf the web using the Opera web browser, more details here. Unfortunately I can’t find any detailed reviews of it online so I’m going to hold back from purchasing it for the time being.

If it has tabbed browsing so that I could have both Hotmail and Gmail running all the time and the ability to move from the pub’s wifi to my home one without reloading I’ll get myself a copy. It doesn’t play any Flash applications though so I think that rules out looking at video on YouTube. It’s only £25 at Amazon so it wouldn’t take that many good reviews for me to buy it.

Instead I have 42 All-Time Classics to keep me occupied when I’m on the move. The highlights on this Ninendo DS game are Backgammon, Chess, Bridge and a card game called President which you can with people online too. There’s even an option for worldwide Ludo, although I can’t see the day I’m sitting in the pub playing Ludo with some kid in Japan. Overall it’s well worth the £20 asking price.

If you get either of these cartridges and you want to play online using your Orange Livebox then check out my step-by-step instructions on how to configure your Nintendo DS.

And finally, check out my friend Seng starring in the music video to Jackie Wilson’s Higher & Higher back in the late eighties. Remember claymation? That’s some afro!

The The - Out of the Blue Into the Fire

This came out in 1986 and I must have listened to it a year later. I’m not sure it’s what a 14 year old should have been getting into but I used to play the Infected album constantly. This video is directed by Tim Pope and features on the unreleased on DVD Infected video. It may not be that safe for work even though it has no nudity or swearing. It’s one of Matt Johnson’s finest songs. I love the minute long one-camera shot at the end.

Radio 5 mention

I listen to Radio FiveLive every day at home. I even go to bed with it playing in the background. The morning 9-12 show hosted by Victoria Derbyshire is a lively phone-in discussion programme which only seems to allow views from the two opposing sides of an argument have their say. You could never get on there if you think both sides have a point to make, you have to be one side or the other. And all the time Victoria play Devil’s Advocate enraging the callers more and more. She’s not as viscious as Nicky Campbell but she gives a good show of herself.

Today I heard there was going to be a discussion on global warming and I decided to send in an eMail in the hope it will be read out on air. The discussion revolved around whether the UK should continue to cut it’s carbon emissions even though countries such as China, India and the USA have not signed-up to do so yet. There’s a possibility that the UK could lose out competitively with these countries.

To get my message read out on air it had to be a strong view, perhaps inflammatory, and it had to be short and to the point but I’ve listened to the show long enough to know the kind of message they read out. So I thought why not mix climate change with slavery! And guess what? My message was read out 3 minutes after sending the eMail. Here’s what I said:

“Should the UK have waited the extra 60 years it took America to abolish slavery? Most arguments FOR slavery were economic but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t have abolished it. The same goes for Climate Change. We need to make a start now!”

Ha! It worked. Now I’m going to try one every day, mixing a relevant issue with an unrelated one. I can’t work out whether to keep to the left-wing eco viewpoint or to sometimes switch over to a right-wing bigot. I’m sure it’s easy to get a “bring back the birch!” eMail read out next time there’s a program about hoodies. I’ll let you know if I have any more luck.

Busy with websites

Posted on October 2nd, 2006 at 4:10 pm

I’ve just finished a site for my latest client, Poised To Move. It’s a home staging company or, to put it another way, they redecorate your flat before you sell it so that you can ask for more money.

Poised To Move Home Staging

I gave it a lot of white space to mirror the decluttering service of the company. The previous website was way too busy. Anyway, I hope you think it looks good.

I’m also currently working on a little side project I’ve created which I’m hoping will win the Brighton & Hove Web Awards for Best Community Site next year. I can’t reveal anything yet but I’ve written all the PHP code, all I need now is to start adding content.

If you read this site often you could always nominate me for this year’s award for Best Personal Site and Blogs. I didn’t get shortlisted last year and I doubt they’ll do it this year neither but you never know.

Brighton Tornado Attack

Posted on October 1st, 2006 at 11:14 am

The seafront was quite blowy this morning but not as windy as it was earlier on this morning as can be seen here:

From the BBC: Coastguards put out a warning to shipping after a tornado was seen sweeping along the South Coast just after dawn on Sunday.

They got the caption wrong as it’s actually Brighton Pier.

The tornado was probably nature’s response to this biblical happening in Margate, called Exodus, yesterday:
