Friends of Dorothy

I saw this sign outside a soap shop called Lush in Brighton.

Friends of Dorothy

Now I’ve heard of the term “Friend of Dorothy” a few years ago as it had been mentioned somewhere on the internet. But every gay person I know has never heard of this phrase even though I thought it must be common parlance in their community.

I wonder how many people see that sign and know what it means. Is it just a polite way to say ‘gay friendly’ without deterring us straight shoppers? I can’t work out if its very clever or its not even going to attract its target audience.

I guessed what it meant when I saw the sign… I think it’s clever… Maybe it should say Dorothy Garland to be a bit more obvious?
